Oral Cancer

Impacting Thousands and On The Rise.

Oral cancer refers to cancer that develops in any of the parts that make up the mouth such as the lips, gums, and tongue.

More than 50,000 North Americans will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year and will cause over 10,000 deaths.

Of the 50,000 newly diagnosed individuals, only slightly more than half will be alive in 5 years. The survival rate of oral cancer patients has not significantly improved in the last 30+ years.

Global 5-year survival rate of oral cancer is ~50%

~70% of oral cancers are not diagnosed until Stage 3/4

Oral cancer kills 1 person every hour of every day in North America

Oral cancers often arise from oral precancer lesions, which may appear as a red or white spot in the mouth that won’t heal. This lesion may not cause any pain or symptoms, and may only be detected by the dentist during a routine exam. Identification of the white or red spot as precancer requires a biopsy (taking a sample of the lesion) and examination of the tissue by a pathologist (under a microscope).
